Clever Rims on a Whim

This week I have been exploring mixed drinks, making Peach Margaritas, and thinking about fun ways to rim a drink glass or a dessert served in a shot glass, parfait glass, or a demitasse cup.

Use any of the rim ideas below with fruit juices: lemon, lime, grapefruit, apple, orange, pineapple, white grape, pear, or savory juices like olive and pickle for a sour twist, or banana pepper for zip.

You will need two plates large enough for the drink or dessert rim you are using, or a rim set.  Fill one plate with the rim ingredient, and the other plate with a little of the juice you have chosen.  Dip the rim of the cup or glass first into the juice, then into the sweet or savory rim ingredient to coat.  If the rim ingredient is a little rich for the drink or dessert you are serving, just dip half of the glass.

Here are some interesting rim options for drinks and desserts:

  • Citrus Zest (lemon, lime, or orange)
  • Colored Peppercorns (also called a “rainbow mix”)
  • Colored Sea Salt (one to try is pink Himalayan sea salt)
  • Crushed Apple Chips
  • Crushed Crackers (cheddar and caraway rye are tasty options)
  • Crushed Corn Chips
  • Crushed Dill Pickle Chips (you can even use pickle juice on the rim!)
  • Crushed or Finely Ground Nuts
  • Crushed Pretzels

◊ SWEET RIMS ◊

  • Chocolate Shavings
  • Coconut Shavings or Toasted Coconut
  • Colored Sugars (you can also mix these with cane sugar for a rim speckled with color)
  • Crushed Amaretti Cookies
  • Crushed Animal Crackers
  • Crushed Candied/Crystallized Ginger
  • Crushed Chocolate-Covered Coffee Beans
  • Crushed Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
  • Crushed Chocolate Mint Cookies
  • Crushed Ginger Snaps
  • Crushed Graham Crackers
  • Crushed Hard Candies (you can use any flavor, like: apple, cherry, pineapple, raspberry, watermelon, and grape, to name a few)
  • Crushed Lemon Drops
